Why Is January Known as Divorce Month?

January Known as Divorce Month.

For many states, January is unofficially known as “Divorce Month,” when attorneys report a noticeable uptick in divorce filings. In 2019, the country’s yearly marriage rate was 6.1 per 1,000 people, with a divorce rate of 2.7 per 1,000 people, according to the CDC. Researchers at the University of Washington recently found that December has the fewest divorce filings, while January’s rate rises quickly to three divorce filings for every 1,000 people.

There are various reasons why January is considered Divorce Month. Many couples revealed one major factor in filing for divorce in January is simply because the holidays, an important time of year for many families, are over. Perhaps those with children do not want to ruin the festive activities and would rather wait until the holidays are done before filing.

Because the holidays are stressful, couples may want to wait until after to reevaluate their marriage before finalizing such a major decision. Additionally, couples who should divorce get caught up in the joy of the holiday season and decide to stay together, however that joy soon wears off and they are back to considering divorce.

Another reason may be that the holidays are the final straw in a failing marriage. Money is at its tightest during the holidays, and that combined with the tumultuous time spent together may prove that divorce is the best solution.

How to Deal With a Divorce in January?

Deciding to divorce is a big decision for a family. The best place to start is to tell the children the news slowly, reassuring them that it is not their fault and that your love for them will never change. Try to keep the days as normal as you can, always reassuring them that things may be different, but your relationship with them will stay the same.

Be aware that many children may hide their emotions, and it is best to give them an opportunity to express themselves. Talk to them about it as much as you can, and if they appear to be upset, you could consider counseling.

Also, try your best to take care of yourself. A divorce is a monumental change, and it could take time for you to adjust.
