The Truth About Divorce in the U.S.

In today’s culture, divorce has become just as accepted as marriage itself. Yet, when something is part of the norm, they begin to attract myths and misconceptions, such as the common belief that 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce. Recent studies are beginning to tell the truth about divorce, and the truth may surprise people. The divorce rate in the United States has steadily fallen throughout the years, but so has the marriage rate. When observing the number of divorces per 1,000 people, the rate has gone down from 4.0 in 2000 to 3.9 in 2018. However, it has been difficult to provide an official figure.

Baby Boomer Generation

There are several key factors that play into disproving the myth. The divorce rate is misconstrued because the Baby Boomer generation has more divorces than any other. It turns out that there is actually a large difference with marriages that occurred decades ago to marriages today. The Baby Boomer generation married at a younger age and researchers suggest that the younger you marry, the higher the chances are of that marriage ending in divorce.

Financial Stability

According to recent studies, it appears that marriage and divorce occur less often than in the 1970s. Research also suggests that couples that stay married are college educated and financially stable. Marriages that are financially strained usually end in divorce as financial instability is a top reason for divorce. The following are other truths about divorce that some people may find surprising:

  • Asian women rank as the least likely to be divorced, whereas black women are most likely to divorce.
  • The average age for someone to go through their first divorce is 30 years old.
  • Children whose parents were divorced are less likely to divorce later in their lives, compared to children whose parents were not divorced.
  • Young women who had a fatherly presence receive more education and better physical health than women who did not have a father present.
