Jobs with the Highest Divorce Rates

Baltimore County divorce lawyers assist individuals working in high ranking divorce rated jobs file for divorce.Researchers continue to study the connection between the amount of money a couple earns and the likelihood that the couple will divorce. While previous reports have concluded that people with less income are less likely to be married and more likely to divorce, this study focused on the occupations wherein divorces were the most and least common.

According to data from an American Community Survey and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals in certain professions are more likely to divorce. The occupations with the highest rate of divorce include:

  • Gaming industry employees
  • Bartenders
  • Flight Attendants
  • Machine Operators
  • Switchboard Operators
  • Telemarketers

With almost 53 percent attributed to individuals working in the gaming industry, such as in casinos or other betting establishments, jobs in the gaming industry had the highest rate of divorce. The study also highlighted those professions in which divorces were least likely to occur. Within these occupations, there was a divorce rate between 17 to 21 percent. These low divorce rate professions included:

  • Actuaries
  • Scientists
  • Clergy
  • Software developers
  • Physical therapists
  • Optometrists
  • Chemical Engineers
  • Physicians

Education and Salary Components

Researchers believe that there is a connection between the amount of education required by these professions and the increased likelihood of divorce. None of the occupations listed in the top 10 highest divorce rates required more than a high school diploma. This is in direct contrast to the occupations listed in the top 10 professions for the lowest divorce rates, where all 10 jobs required a college degree.

There was also a significant difference in salary for the occupations listed with the highest and lowest divorce rates. Occupations with the highest divorce rates earned less than $35,000 per year, while the occupations with the lowest divorce rates had income above $75,000.

The data also suggests other factors that may affect the likelihood of divorce. These factors include the employment prospects for the occupation, employment stability, physical demands of the job, regularity in working hours, time spent traveling away from the family, and exposure to alcohol or party atmospheres.
