Just shy of half of all marriages end in divorce. However, divorce may not be the sad story it was once thought to be. According to a national relationship study by Avvo, 73 percent of women and 61 percent of men move on after divorce with no regrets about their decision. Furthermore, 75 percent of women would rather be single, successful, and happy as opposed to miserable in marriage, with only 58 percent of men feeling the same.
Despite popularly accepted gender stereotypes, research seems to suggest that men may be more dependent on marriage than women.
However, it seems women tend to prioritize happiness above marriage and seem to be unafraid of independence. While women may move on quicker, they seem to shoulder less of the blame for the demise of the marriage. Around 64 percent of women almost or actually fully blamed the end of the marriage on their ex-spouse, with only 29 percent admitting their own fault in the divorce. This change in perspective may be a reflection of overall changing attitudes about the topic of marriage in our modern society.
Researchers note a higher bar expected of men by women of what it takes to stay in a relationship as part of this switch. With attitudes and the world changing for women, it is not surprising that many priorities and attitudes women have went through changes as well. While in the past, a husband that did not cheat may have sufficed, women today are enjoying more of their independence and are no longer settling for less than a best friend and a romantic partner.
With these findings, researchers urge those considering divorce to look into other options before making a final decision. Instead, researchers encourage couples to seek counseling and get a third party opinion before throwing in the towel. Trying to salvage a previously working relationship could lead to a lower divorce rate and a higher rate of happiness reported within marriage as opposed to women finding post-divorce bliss alone.
