Towson Divorce Lawyers: Women More Often Initiate Divorce

A sociology professor at Stanford University recently conducted a study to evaluate what factors are driving the divorce rate. The research shows that women are responsible for initiating more divorces than men. Study findings suggest that the reason behind this is that today, women are interested in pursuing relationships that put them on an equal plane with their life partners. This is different than the mindset of years ago that called for men to go work and women to stay at home.

The data considered that many have assumed women initiate divorce more often than men because they are naturally more sensitive than their male counterparts. Yet, this way of thinking did not seem to cover all the driving forces that would lead women to initiate the dissolution of their marriages.

The study included survey results from over 2,000 heterosexual couples in 2009 that focused on the circumstances under which couples met and what motivated them to stay together. In 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2015 the same couples were asked to answer follow-up questions. Research revealed that some of the participating couples were no longer together which prompted researchers to further investigate what happened to end the relationships.

Conclusions of the Study

The study had some surprising conclusions. Women initiated over two-thirds of divorces, while men generated one-third of divorce proceedings. In situations wherein couples cohabitated but were not legally married, breakups were equally initiated by both parties. The conclusion drawn from these results suggests that women’s initiative to divorce really has little to do with men, but is motivated more by their upbringing or a self-driven desire to start a new life.

Another valuable finding study is the realization that love and heartbreak are dealt with in very different ways by each gender. Woman experience more intense emotions and physical pain than men do after a break up, but usually recover quickly and end up finding themselves stronger than before. Men seem to ignore their emotions by quickly moving onto another relationship. There may never be a conclusive reason why more women than men initiate divorce, but one explanation is that women are generally less satisfied with their partners than men tend to be.
