Towson Divorce Lawyers Discuss the Negative Impact of Social Media on Marriages

Individuals use a variety of social networking sites as a convenient way of receiving, giving and sharing information with society. According to various studies, social media and technology are not helping to decrease marital conflicts but in fact are magnifying troubling issues in marriages and relationships.  Moreover, social networking sites have been associated with the negative feeling married couples often experience regarding the quality of their relationship or a pending divorce; however, this link does not necessarily mean that social media is the cause for problematic relationships but instead could be a symptom of a bigger problem.

A study published in Computers of Human Behavior found that individuals who continuously use social media networking sites, especially Facebook, had increased divorce rates and relationship difficulties.  The study compared divorce rates throughout each state to per capita Facebook accounts, as well as surveyed couples about marriage satisfaction and social media use.  The study revealed the 20% annual increase in Facebook account users could be associated with a 2.18 percent to a 4.32 percent increase in divorce rates. Conversely, the individual surveys anticipated that couples who do not use social media accounts were 11% more satisfied in the marriage than a constant social media user. The data also found that a heavy social media user was more likely to have thoughts about leaving their spouse then a non-social media user.

This study was not able to establish a causal relationship between Facebook use and poor marital outcomes but it was able to determine that a correlation is evident. Researchers suggest that individuals who are experiencing relationship difficulties could be utilizing social media sites as means of support, which explains the association between increased usage and marital difficulties. It was also inferred that the addictive aspects of social media usage could lead to marital disagreements, jealousy, and possible extra-marital affairs.  Researchers feel that further studies would likely show that social media use exacerbates troubled marriages.
