Bel-Air Divorce Lawyers Discuss Effects of Divorce on Children

Divorce can be difficult on any family, and even an amicable divorce can have an effect on all involved. Much of the research that has been done on how divorce affects children focuses on the negative impact that a divorce can have on children; however, the effects of divorce are not always adverse. In some situations divorce can be beneficial for children. For example, it could free them from an abusive environment full of screaming, name-calling and emotional turmoil.

Many couples who stay together for the sake of the children may actually be making a mistake. Their children inadvertently become victims of the bad marriage. Daily disputes, resentment and hate can do more harm on a child’s psyche than a divorce would. In some cases, divorce can free everyone from hostility.

Although it is expected that there will be a transition and change in the family structure post-divorce, children may also benefit from having two separate households and parenting styles. Typically, both parents will be happier after a divorce which allows children to grow up in a positive environment. The tension between the parents is lessened, and children will no longer feel as though they are in the middle of adult issues.

Divorce can also provide children with the opportunity to learn how to compromise. When children see their parents working through issues in a divorce, they learn that working through hard times in a cohesive manner can lead to a happy outcome. A parents’ decision to end an unhappy marriage and get a divorce also shows children that one’s personal happiness is important in life. Although divorce is often a difficult decision and impacts the entire family, sometimes it is the best solution for the well-being of the children.
