According to a study published in the online journal BMJ, doctors are keeping their marriages intact. Despite the stereotypes of grueling hours and demanding schedules, physicians fare better at remaining married than most other healthcare occupations. Senior author of the study, Dr. Anupam Jena, a Harvard Medical School professor and physician at Massachusetts General Hospital stated that doctors had the lowest divorce rates among healthcare professionals with the exception of pharmacists.
Researchers analyzed approximately 250,000 surveys from divorced healthcare professionals between 2008 through 2013. Doctors comprised 40,000 surveys and the balance consisted of nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and healthcare executives. Surprisingly, doctor’s divorce rates came in at 24%, second only to pharmacist rates of 23%. Topping the charts were nurses, which study findings reveal more than one-third of them had divorced. Healthcare executives followed at 31%, while dentists came in very close to doctors and pharmacists at 25%. Thia compares to those not in the healthcare sector with a general overall divorce rate of 35%.
Interestingly, researchers revealed a seemingly unfair disparity between genders. Female physicians had a one and a half times increased chance of being divorced, especially for those who work 40 hours or more per week. The opposite was true for male doctors, and the rate was reduced for those who worked less hours. Researchers suspect these results are due to cultural influences on women but feel more research needs to be done. A commonly held belief still exists that women maintain more responsibility for raising the children as well as running a household. If a woman is trying to work full-time and handle domestic duties, the difficulty of finding a balance between the two can result in enough strain to cause a divorce.
