Baltimore Divorce Lawyers Discuss Upcoming Supreme Court Decision Regarding Gay Marriage

The Supreme Court has decided to hear arguments this spring on whether or not states have the right to ban same-sex marriage.  The timing of a Supreme Court decision, expected in June, could pose problems for the Republican Party in the 2016 presidential race.  A Supreme Court decision on this issue will likely generate a great deal of publicity for same-sex marriage during the Republican Primary.  Republican strategists are divided on how they think a decision might affect the primary election.  Some believe that the finality of a Supreme Court decision will put the issue to rest, while others speculate that it may add fuel to the fire and incite further debate.

A recent CNN/ORC International survey found that 57% of Americans believe that gay and lesbian couples have a Constitutional right to get married.  Although many socially conservative politicians within the Republican Party are steadfastly holding on to the opinion that same-sex marriage should be banned, many others are reluctant to state a position publicly.  This is because they are afraid to risk alienating either voters who support same-sex marriage, or socially conservative Republicans.

Taking a firm stance on either side of this issue could have dire consequences for a Republican candidate.  Former congressman and campaign advisor, Vin Weber, believes that most Republican candidates’ positions rest somewhere in the middle of the two sides.  While they may not fully support same-sex marriage, they are not apt to campaign against it either.
