Protecting Children During Divorce

Towson Divorce Lawyers: Protecting Children During DivorceCoping with divorce can be particularly difficult for children. While many factors such as property distribution and alimony are often stressful for divorcing couples, the contentious situation is perhaps most overwhelming for the children. This is perhaps most apparent in matters regarding custody and visitation. During this trying time, both parents must put forth a special effort to make the children feel safe and protected.

Children are often very sensitive and vulnerable during a divorce. It is important for them to understand what is happening and how it will affect them. Here are some things that parents can do to help ease the transition:

  • Tell the children about the divorce together in a comfortable setting
  • Communicate unwavering love and support for the children
  • Assure the children that the divorce is not their fault
  • Admit that it will be a difficult time for everyone
  • Encourage the children to maintain their relationship with both parents
  • Try to keep routines and schedules consistent
  • Shield the children from the legal process and details of the divorce
  • Attempt to answer all the children’s questions appropriately
  • Seek professional assistance if the situation calls for it

Unfortunately, divorces are often not amicable, and many spouses have ongoing conflicts. Children should not be involved in or exposed to these adult issues. Many children may feel as if the divorce is their fault. They should not be too involved in the process and should never feel as if they must choose a side. Here are some things that parents should not do during a divorce:

  • Do not try and keep the divorce a secret; let the children know as soon as possible
  • Do not speak to the children negatively about the other parent
  • Do not confide in the children about problems such as money
  • Do not ask the children for information on an ex-spouse
  • Do not allow children to choose where they will spend their holidays
  • Do not introduce any other major changes to the children’s lives; this may overwhelm them and cause them to feel a sense of instability
  • Do not argue in front of the children
  • Do not involve the children in the divorce proceedings or details of the divorce agreement

Most importantly, children need to know that both parents love them and will always be there for them. Children will sense when their parents are respectful and cooperative, or hostile and bitter. By taking steps to ensure that the children are well-informed and supported, divorcing parents can help protect children during divorce.
